It is not only about solving your problems to experience true happiness. Positive psychology emphasises the importance of seven aspects that contribute to a happy life.

1. Friendship

Having one or more close friends makes a person happier. It's not about how many friends we have. What seems to make a difference, is if and how often we undertake communal activities and share our personal feelings.

2. Physical well-being

Keep moving and eat well. A sound body for a sound mind. Regular exercise has been associated with improved mental well-being and a lower incidence of depression.

3. Meaning

Discover meaning in life. A sense of spirituality is closely related to the discovery of greater meaning in our lives. There is a close link between spiritual practice and happiness.

4. Kindness

People with a caring attitude seem to be happier and less depressed. Reaching out to another person benefits both you and them.

5. Flow

Involve deeply in an activity you like to do. Or try to reach a goal that is challenging but well suited to your skills. Doing so, you will experience a sense of 'flow'. Feeling flow evokes intrinsic motivation, which enhances your happiness.

6. Strengths

The happiest people are those that have discovered their unique strengths and virtues and use these for a purpose that is greater than their own personal goals.

7. Positive mindset

Treasure gratitude, mindfulness and hope. Grateful people have been shown to have greater positive emotion, a greater sense of belonging, and a lower incidence of depression and stress.
